• Ashanti Douglas was born on October 13, 1980, in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York. As a child, she was discovered at a talent show, which launched her career. Ashanti turned down scholarships for both Princeton and Hampton University, deciding to pursue singing full-time. She landed a position as a backup singer for Jennifer Lopez, then signed with Murder Inc. Records.

• Ashanti's nickname is Five-O.

• Ashanti has released three studio albums but The Declaration is the singer's first crack at putting an album together without direction from The Inc.

• On March 5, 2008 Ashanti was on Suckerfree on MTV. She premiered her new video, "The Way That I Love You". The video is definitely a different look for the R&B star, as it tells the tale of a woman-- played by Ashanti -- scorned by her unfaithful boyfriend. She also talked about a song titled "Mother" featuring Babyface, which is about her momanger (Tina Douglas). Ashanti also explained why it's been three years since her last studio album.
